In the world of Agile, particularly when implementing the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), there are several critical roles that help organizations scale their Agile practices across teams and departments. Two of the most prominent roles are the SAFe Agilist and the SAFe Scrum Master. While both play vital parts in fostering agility, they have distinct responsibilities, skill sets, and certifications. Understanding these differences is essential for anyone looking to pursue a career in SAFe or to optimize their organization's Agile transformation.
In this blog, we’ll dive into the roles of SAFe Agilist and SAFe Scrum Master, compare their responsibilities, and highlight the key skills and certifications required for each.
A SAFe Agilist (often referred to as a SAFe Program Consultant or SPC) is someone who has been trained and certified to lead Agile transformations at the enterprise level using the SAFe framework. The SAFe Agilist role is focused on creating a vision for how Agile practices can be scaled across the entire organization, guiding the transition from traditional project management to Agile delivery methods.
The SAFe Agilist (SA) certification is awarded after completing the SAFe Agilist Leading SAFe course, which provides training on leading a Lean-Agile transformation in an enterprise. The course covers the principles of SAFe, Agile at scale, and how to lead an organization through the transition to a SAFe environment.
A SAFe Scrum Master is a Scrum Master who is trained to apply Agile and Scrum practices within the context of the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe). The Scrum Master’s role in SAFe differs slightly from the traditional Scrum Master role because they operate in an environment with multiple teams and ARTs (Agile Release Trains), making their responsibilities more complex.
The SAFe Scrum Master (SSM) certification is achieved after completing the SAFe Scrum Master training course, which covers the role of the Scrum Master in a SAFe environment. This course focuses on facilitating Scrum events, working with Agile teams, and handling the challenges of scaling Scrum in larger organizations.
While both the SAFe Agilist and SAFe Scrum Master play important roles in the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), they serve different functions within the organization. The SAFe Agilist focuses on leading the broader transformation and aligning Agile practices across the enterprise, while the SAFe Scrum Master works closely with individual teams to ensure they follow Agile and Scrum principles effectively.
If you’re interested in leading an Agile transformation at the organizational level, pursuing a SAFe Agilist certification may be the right choice. However, if you’re passionate about facilitating Scrum processes and helping teams deliver value, the SAFe Scrum Master certification might be the better fit. Both roles are crucial for a successful Agile transformation, and understanding the differences can help you decide which path to pursue based on your career goals and interests.
